Why train tickets made sense inside a grocery-store partner app.

The Question

How can SME grocery stores provide train reservation for people? In Indonesia, trains are one of the most popular transportation choices, especially during Eid al-Fitr when many people travel back to their hometowns.

Train is a favorite transportation mode, so grocery stores can help sell train tickets to local customers.

02 Process

Research plan, objectives, respondent criteria, and prioritization.

Research Plan

Stage 01

Started with quantitative and qualitative methods to identify product backlog priority from Mitra's perspective and decide which backlogs needed deeper research.

Objectives

Stage 02

Understand Mitra app usage and attitude, explore the experience of using Mitra Tokopedia, identify pain points and unmet needs, then evaluate the new backlog concept.

Respondent Criteria

Stage 03

Approved Mitra Tokopedia users, recruited from the quantitative phase, active in the app, with at least five transactions, at least one transaction each month, and a minimum one month of membership.

Sampling

Stage 04

Targeted three Mitra from each Sobat group, with n:100 target and n:58 achieved. The qualitative sample was n:11 across Bogor, Bekasi, and Cirebon.

Narrative

We observed Mitra behavior across real booking contexts, then translated recurring friction into actionable design opportunities. The strongest pattern was not awareness, but completion: users knew the feature existed, yet still needed clearer guidance and lower cognitive load to finish a purchase confidently.

We translated each "How Might We" into concrete design bets, then mapped them into user flow and wireflow artifacts. The team aligned on one principle: every step should reduce decision friction and move users forward with confidence, especially during high-pressure booking moments.

Why This Flow Works for Mitra Tokopedia Users

The design challenge was building a train reservation feature inside a grocery-store partner app — users are shop owners, not frequent digital ticket buyers. Every screen had to be scannable, low-friction, and confident enough to complete without hand-holding.

  • Clear destination search: a familiar search-first pattern borrowed from transport apps reduces the cognitive lift for first-time users.
  • Readable train list: departure time, duration, class and price are surfaced at a glance — no drilling into a detail page just to compare options.
  • Seat selection made spatial: the seat map mirrors the physical train layout so users can orient themselves instantly without reading instructions.
  • Honest empty states: when no trains are available, the empty page explains why and offers a clear next step instead of a dead end.
  • Payment kept simple: the payment method screen surfaces only what's needed, keeping the Mitra's existing GoPay/bank flow consistent with the rest of the Tokopedia ecosystem.
  • Review before commit: a full summary page before final booking reduces errors and builds trust, especially for high-season purchases.

In usability testing, all 5 participants completed the booking without issues. The clean layout and readable typography were the two most cited reasons for confidence in the flow.

In task testing, 5 out of 5 users had no issue booking a train reservation, and 4 out of 5 felt the flow was simple enough.
